Conclusion

All three Tang poets started their court service with great ambitions in politics. Nevertheless, various social and human factors prevented them from reaching their full potentials, such as the An Lu-shan Rebellion, the dispatches, and the exclusion from their colleagues. What should be the “proper” political attitude during such unrest? Unretrivable passion, deep concern, or inner detachment? The three poets made their answers sound by using water as a metaphor. What they saw through the water did inform us what political attitudes they held and what kinds of people they were.
